WHAT IS THE SPARK PLASMA SINTERING OR FIELD ASSISTED SINTERING TECHNOLOGY 
(FAST/SPS)?

Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), also called Field Assisted Sintering Technology (FAST) or Direct Current Sintering (DCS), is a powder metallurgy hot-pressing technique capable of producing ultra dense materials in record time, with almost no limitation to the powder materials used.
The main difference between FAST / SPS and more conventional powder metallurgy technologies is its heating method and also the fast process time (<1h)

Field Assisted Sintering Technology/Spark Plasma Sintering (FAST/SPS)

THE FIELD ASSISTED SINTERING TECHNOLOGY, SPARK PLASMA SINTERING (FAST/SPS) PROCESS CONSISTS OF A HIGH INTENSITY PULSED CURRENT THAT PASSES THROUGH A GRAPHITE TOOLING.

With this set-up it is possible to reach high heating and cooling rates of over 100°C/min. The Field Assisted Sintering Technology, Spark Plasma Sintering (FAST/SPS) process can reach high temperature in only a few minutes compared to several hours for other sintering techniques.

The main advantage of this powder metallurgy technology is the absence of organic binders during the process that can cause defects during sintering. The technology limits residual stress within the material. through the efficient control of the part’s thermal gradient during the sintering process.

This reduced processing cycle combined with the fast-heating rate result in a fine material microstructure and an increase in the mechanical properties of the sintered materials.

Thanks to these assets, this unique powder sintering process is used to easily manufacture high performance and innovative materials (composites, hard metals, metal alloys, refractory materials).

With a heating rate of more than 100°C/minute, the materials quickly reach their sintering temperature.

Improved mechanical performance.

The Field Assisted Sintering Technology, Spark Plasma Sintering (FAST/SPS) process prevents grain growth within the materials. In addition to the pressure and temperature applied, the materials maintain a fine microstructure and can reach a density of 99.5%.

Material waste less than 1%

All the powder sintered in the process is densified, and there is virtually no powder waste, or any other waste.

Densify any material between 200 and 2400°c
